They reduce fear, but they don't eliminate it.
In my own experience you would have to take quite a lot of Valium to prevent someone from being able to scare you.
On the other hand, some medications like ativan can be so strong that even if you were attacked by a pit bull you would consciously understand what was happening, and know you had to get away, but you probably wouldn't be too afraid, even though you would recognize the danger.
